Seeing the Grand Canyon by mule

India Garden is where the drivers who are spending the night at Phantom Ranch separate from the day riders and embark in their private affair. Although they have reached half the distance from the coast south to the Phantom Ranch, a quick look back at the edge will be observed that have fallen from two thirds of the total variation of altitude mule corral to the canyon floor. Most of them will take more than a quick glance, however, from Indian Garden it is difficult to see how this canyon wall, possibly, could be covered. But they did, and they all feel a degree of pride in their achievements. The hardest part is over.

The gently sloping trail now follows Garden Creek, as they stroll through its narrow channel to the bottom the canyon. It is beautiful postcard. Poplars and willows, lush riparian vegetation and the tranquil sound of flowing clear waters give them the feeling that a new world has been introduced. Considering advanced beyond rookie status at this point, they are safe and comfortable in the chair and the majority of them really relax and enjoy the ride. Whereas it is common to see bighorn sheep on top of the trail in the morning, the deer are what they are likely to see down here. Being accustomed to the threat of humans, animals in the canyon just take a look and then move on to their business. This will be a picture for those pilots OPP have never seen a deer in the wild.

They all look the collapse left as Garden Creek is separated from the track, which descends quickly and disappear quickly in a small rocky gorge. As you grow, your focus will be later and will be a matter of seconds before realizing that there is nothing but outdoors in front of them. Hola Diablo corkscrew! As you round a bend to be found on the side of a canyon wall on a narrow ledge, contemplating a nearly vertical drop-off for the valley floor. A bottom of the valley, each of them to say is at least a thousand feet below, in a canyon that is impressive own right anywhere but here. A certain degree of anxiety and some will return later recalled this as the most fearsome of the entire journey. Even Garden Creek had the good sense of rodeo before it came to this.

In the bottom of Devil's Corkscrew that is more earth friendly, following again along the stream, as it slopes gently toward its final approach to river. The wrangler probably verify that the Colorado River is not far ahead and comfort with the assurance that the road will not surprise most diabolical plan. A few general comments are heard and that they relax again, now the most difficult over.

The Bright Angel Trail breaks through a small ravine and offers his first view of the Colorado River are literally only when on the River. There is, right in front of them. Most drivers think that is larger than it appeared in the photos. All is impressed by the energy and power that emanates, and this will be the great point to some memories. As you wander back to the comfortable path of the river at the water's edge, if it was not noticed before, now, this is the trip of a lifetime.

Suddenly cries were heard in the corridors as the track ahead of a hill rounds. The silver bridge across the river can be seen in the distance, which extends from the canyon wall to canyon wall. It's a long, high suspension bridge, and others will probably wonder how it ever could be built in such a remote location. They know that this is not your path, but can not help saying something when you first see it. Approaching the bridge is even longer and higher than first looked at the steel plant and large mesh allows the stream of the river that is clearly below the feet. Wow! A long ways under your feet! To file by the end of the bridge, most are glad they are not crossing the river here, but now more forward thinking pilots wonder what the next bridge has to offer, and may even ask their wrangler much.

As they continue to follow the path of the river to the bridge over the Kaibab Trail, which begins to realize that they are climbing back up, and once again the road has become a narrow ledge of next to a wall of solid rock with a barrel vertical drop that is difficult to ignore. While it may be only a few hundred meters to the bottom this time, the sights and sounds of the mighty Colorado River directly below them add yet another feeling of being remembered.

Approaching the dark entrance to the tunnel, more resembles a cave of a passage through the rock. Like a giant tube, which curves around just enough to obscure the light visible from the other end. Someone will probably sound of fear in the dark tunnel. The other end of the tunnel is a vertical rock wall with the Kaibab Bridge connected directly to it. A step in the solid rock floor of the tunnel, the next step in the suspension bridge, with the river directly below them. A long way below them. Is there no end to this adventure? At least this bridge has solid mats in the background, the mules and riders alike amenities.

Now the really hard part is over. Historic and rustic Phantom Ranch awaits just up the track in another welcoming oasis of shade of poplar. After removal, the bar will be the top of the barrier to the riders. The Canteen is comfortable and cozy and, after his entry, sip cold drinks and start sharing your memories impressive. These are individuals and changes will be enough sure that no foreigner could fully appreciate their descriptions. But no matter the beauty they have seen or the magnitude of their adventure, they will be happy to leave the saddle. Some are probably already worried about the likelihood of discomfort in the morning, in the long journey out of the canyon. Not be as bad as it can fear.

Phantom Ranch is located in a small draw on the north side of the Colorado River, where the Bright Angel Arroyo has decided to join the great river. The people are friendly, the food is excellent and the beds are conducive to sleep. The wake-up call comes too early for most, but his enthusiasm is beginning to revive, since the changeover to the fresh morning air. If you can resist overeating the five star breakfast is provided in the canteen, which is happy and ready for whatever comes. The nervous exuberance of yesterday will be absent today, are old hands now. When they arrive at the corral of mules, some of them will realize that the Wrangler has been working rounding before dawn, feeding and saddling the mules. There will be some comments like the butt hit the chair, but his enthusiasm is higher.

Back through the Kaibab Bridge, through the tunnel, past the cutoff River Trail, and out of smaller remote river canyon gorge rise. Riding uphill is different from riding downhill and most drivers will be easier. The red clay spirals steep path to the shade of the morning as if to escape the dangers of the river, as soon as possible. Still, as brokers are now confident in their riding skills will be a silent march to this section of the track to the rest stop on the edge of the first plateau. From here, however, the Kaibab Trail will offer a totally unique viewing experience and higher. They are entering the countries of the camera.

With the track and travel along the ridge covers most of the way, the views available of brokers feel they are at the top of the world. Every day, even every hour of the day, the shades and nuances across the vast canyon can change. Distant earth tones and pastel colors transformed during the ascent, always hiding the true nature of the rugged canyon. Each time the path leads them to a higher level high, the panoramic views are almost indescribable. Each time the river comes into view, be a little lower and once again begins to resemble a painting more than a reality. The magnitude of the canyon back to the focus and marvel aloud that only a few hours ago, were part of that picture.

It is almost certain Some of the hikers who become physically stressed. The Kaibab Trail is shorter than the path Bright Angel and has more slope. To be more pronounced, having no fresh water sources, precious and few rest areas with shade usually catches people by surprise uneducated. They have discovered that the barrel caters to anyone. For now, drivers are taking for granted the strength, endurance and reliability of the animals they are riding. The show reminded hikers control of his good luck and prompt some friendly expressions of gratitude to the mule that has become his friend. A friend who will be indelible in their memories.

On approaching the coast the south near Yaki Point, which will be tired and a bit dim. Overall, the ride today has been quieter and calmer than yesterday. Then, one last time, I remember the barrel of his superiority, just before the release. Near the summit, the road back to power through a series of curves, up sharply the seemingly vertical rock wall. Once again the characteristics of the height and distance make this a recognized wonder of the world and has caused so much anxiety yesterday.

One last reminder that this is the Grand Canyon. A final assessment, and if needed, who have experienced the trip of a lifetime.
