In Praise of Comely Electrical Pylons

As with many things in life, we sometimes have to just look beyond the obvious, beyond those two dimensions and into the third. Whether it’s Derard Depardieu’s nose, (OK, his whole face…), Tom Cruise’s short sightedness (he dumped… her, … for… for… her!), or Bankers Bonuses (c’mon, they have a doctors note that says they need new Lambo’s or they’ll have a mental breakdown…), a look ‘beyond the obvious’ generally enriches our life. Take another example. The apparent ungainly electricity pylons with their associated power transformers and high voltage insulators that scar our countryside could be looked at another way. They are iron maidens caring for our electricity demands, gracing the landscape fo our beautiful country, caring, in a Florence nightingale sense for our needs, and safeguarding our resources just as would a stiff matron in a Carry-On film. The fat one. Stout is good.

These electricity pylons convey juice – pumped up, steroid laced, muscle building – juice to our businesses and households, without which we could never watch that final episode of 24 (well, final before the next round…), or the latest installment of East Enders and keep going until it ends sometime in the 2080′s. So next time you’re on that car journey and see these magnificant structures along the motorway, don’t snap at the kids who in the back seat periodically emit ‘are we there yet?’ (do they have a timer to remind them when to say it?) – instead discuss the beauty of the matrons of the countryside, the maidens of the landscape, the safeguarders of our power. Along with their power transformers and high voltage insulators and all the associated pole line hardware, utility poles, etc., they are beauty, they define dignified attraction, and not just the magnetic kind.

Try dressing your nearest one for Christmas if you find it hard to see the beauty. Have the kids climb and pop that fairy right on top. They’ll get good exercise, fight their fears and save you from putting your back out. Take up ballroom dancing and take one as your partner, it’ll be a baptism of fire that will shape your next career. Whatever you do – best of all you’ll be contributing to the growing vision of the beautiful maidens of our precious land.

Iron Maiden recording a new album this year?

I heard that Iron Maiden is set to start recording their next album at the end of the Summer. Does anybody know where I can find info on this upcoming album? That would be cool if you could post me a link.

They said it would be next year. I assume it will be next summer since they just got off tour and as far as I know they don’t have any plans on going into the studio anytime soon. There’s still rumors that there not done with this tour yet.
