Americans … What is the "sport" a coat?

Does it refer to any jacket / coat is waist length? I've seen the term regularly applied to both the adaptation (jackets / wool fabrics) and rain jackets casual / golf, etc. Why is hunting the term often used so broadly?

a Sport Coat is similar to a sack. Is to measure and, in general has the same cut as a jacket, sport coat designed to be used by itself (ie not combined with), Dress Pants. but referring to other types of jackets as sport coats simply bad speak.
