I want a motorcycle … advice please?

I need a vehicle to go to work and school … I want a bike rather than a car, because I think are just sooo cool! Also, the gas would be cheaper. Some questions … 1) Is it a real motorcycle insurance is much cheaper (in general) and then for the car? 2) What is the difference between a cruiser, a street bike and a sport bike? Which is better for someone who basically going to use to drive around, not for specialists or something? 3) I know this is a kind of random … but the helmet and jacket to get really hot? I'm living in southern California.
