What kind of coat / jacket is best for Washington DC in late October?

My child's class goes to DC October 21 to 24. I know we can not predict time, but usually what kind of clothes / jacket is appropriate at this time of year in DC? Is it usually pretty warm during the day with a Jacket required am and evenings? I'm thinking just jeans, Long Sleeve jerseys t / and a jacket (for example, the North Face )…. What seems reasonable?

The North Face may be too heavy for our temporary workers at that time. He would be fine with a light, hooded lined windbreaker in case rain. Temps are usually high in the low 60s and 70s during the day and 50 at night. Therefore, the selection of Long Sleeved shirts is good. You can add a sweater sweater style, too, just in case. Layers is always a good idea when the weather starts to change.
